IT Consultants Insurance, Software & Engineers

The insurance requirements for an IT Consultant can differ significantly depending on each consultants’ speciality.

Consultants can range from office-based software engineers, App designers, through to IT Engineers managing external firms IT & security, cloud data, website design, computer game designers, AI/VR etc software designers, and repairs/supply/install of computer hardware and proprietary software.

The key concern tends to be the Professional Indemnity exposure, should their advice and activities result in the failure of their clients’ systems, service and loss of data, or exposure from external hacking attacks, which could be catastrophic for the end client and for the IT consultant/engineering firm’s reputation.

Loss of Data, cyber security is also very high up on every such firms’ agenda.

Public Liability i.e. injury to persons with whom the IT consultant has contact or damage to third-party property is also a high priority, especially when IT consultants visit clients’ premises.

Products Liability tends not to be a major concern on the basis that most IT consultants simply supply other firms’ proprietary products.

Otherwise, the insurance requirements tend to be similar to other commercial firms, being insurance for the office/workshop operation, employers’ liability, contingent products liability, business interruption for loss/reduction of income, personal accident, management liability, fleet/vehicle risks, credit insurance, business travel etc.

More specialist cover may be required where Intellectual Property may be determined to be an exposure i.e. design of specialist software where others may seek to ‘copy’ the IP or where others may suggest their IP has been copied. Specialist cover is available for firms, although it can be expensive.

Risks Management is key to placing such IT Consultants Insurance and the experience of engineers, their qualifications and the type of clients being managed are all key factors. Of even greater concern is the amount of data being held on own or third-party servers, the protections in place for client security etc.
